Shaping the future with natural magic

Organic linen, made from flax, is a durable natural fiber with a rich history. It thrives in less fertile soil and needs minimal attention during growth. Every part of the flax plant is utilized, affecting any residual products, even the finished linen garments. No wonder we love it so much.

Linen originates from Egypt around 10,000 years ago, possibly even earlier according to cave discoveries in Georgia. Carbon-dating confirms its use in Egyptian clothing since 8,000 BC. As a comparison, we in the Nordics were still enduring the frosty aftermath of the last ice age during this period, wrapped in layers of carefully selected animal skins sewn together. However, with the rising temperature, linen could eventually find its path to our latitude. For that we are eternally grateful.

Praised for its cooling properties, linen surged in popularity in the late 19th century, becoming a wardrobe essential. Durable and timeless, the fabric remains a staple in modern wardrobes, appreciated for its enduring charm and comfort in warm weather.

Nature’s own craft

Flax fibers come from the stems of the flax plant. To extract them, the stems are first roasted to separate the plant from the wood. The previous use of leaches has been replaced by special steam processes to break up the fibers. The longer the stems, the better the quality of the fibers. In a process called cottonization, impurities are removed and the fiber bundles are broken down and separated in short single fibers. After this process, the linen becomes a strong, absorbent, and fast-drying fabric that can easily be blended with other natural material such as cotton or wool.

Organic is for life

We think organic linen is better than conventional materials because it doesn’t rely on harmful chemicals like fungicides, herbicides, and pesticides. It’s mostly made of cellulose and naturally decomposes at the end of its very long lifecycle without harming the environment. Cared for right, a garment from organic linen will be a companion for decades to come – totally in line with our ”buy less, buy better” philosophy.
